Gestures and Paralinguistics
GESTURES:
It is the communication through eye contact, body postures which comes under the 'Chironomia' which is the art of using hand gestures while communicating. Gestures includes using hand signals. pointing and waving to describe something which may or may not be in numerical terms. These non verbal communications signals are so powerful and influential that in some organizations there is a limit on non-verbal behaviors allowed.
- Gestures are not universal which means that the meaning of the same gesture may be understood by one person in a positive way and other with a negative meaning of it.
- Gestures are of two types: voluntary gestures( waving a friend would be an intention method of saying hello)and involuntary gestures(Throwing one man's arm in irritation may seems to be involuntary action indicating anger in the person)
PARALINGUISTICS :
It is generally concerned with how the words are being spoken. it usually means describing your voice sounds which includes the rhythm, inflection, loudness. This form of communication is most noticeable when people in the organization uses their voice to indicate what they want to say instead of their stated words.
Benefit of this form of communication is that there is very less chance of misinterpretation of the message as the intention of delivering the message is clearly defined.
A bright happy tone is considered that a particular person is doing well whereas a low voice would indicate that you are not doing a fine job.
Personal view: Gestures almost contribute to 50 percent of the non-verbal communication used up in today's organisation with different meanings and it is also found that gestures are easy to understand as compared to the other non-verbal communication tools.
